St Felix sits on 75 acres of heather-edged Suffolk coast, a short walk from the seaside town of Southwold and a salt-air bicycle ride from a working harbour. The school was founded in 1897 as one of the earliest girls’ boarding schools in England; it became fully co-educational in 1994 and is now home to 280 boys and girls aged 3–18.
The campus has the considered beauty of late-Victorian school architecture — gables, quadrangles, generous light — and a coastline outside the front gate that quietly shapes what is possible academically. Marine science, sailing, environmental fieldwork and a strong creative-writing tradition are the school’s natural strengths.
Heritage
Founded by Margaret Isabella Gardiner in 1897 as one of the first girls’ boarding schools to take education seriously rather than ornamentally, St Felix has a long-standing reputation for producing self-possessed, intellectually serious young women — and, since 1994, young men who tend to share that bearing. The campus has grown around its original quadrangle without losing its sense of scale.

The school’s motto is Felix Quia Fortis (happy because brave). It plays out in daily life as a culture that prizes intellectual courage, the willingness to think aloud, and the everyday quiet bravery of being honestly oneself. A school-owned fleet of dinghies at the Southwold harbour; a coastal sailing programme through summer.
