Field marine science with a sustainability spine.
Set on the Suffolk coast where the Blyth meets the North Sea, this fortnight pairs classical marine biology — rock-pool surveys, transects, lab work — with the harder, more current questions: How is this coastline changing? What does the UN’s SDG 14 (Life Below Water) ask of a young scientist? What does a working harbour do about microplastics?
Mornings are lectures and seminars led by practising marine ecologists; afternoons are out on the shore with quadrats, salinity meters and field notebooks; evenings are lab analysis, sport and the gentle rhythm of British boarding life.
Why this programme matters
Marine science without sustainability is incomplete; sustainability without fieldwork is theory. We refuse both halves. Students leave with a publishable-grade group project, a working knowledge of three UN SDGs, and — just as importantly — the embodied memory of cold North Sea water on their hands at 7am. That is what changes how a 16 year-old talks about climate for the next decade.
Programme structure
- Day01
Arrival & coastal orientation
Heathrow pick-up, coach to St Felix, room allocation, welcome dinner and a sunset walk along the Southwold beach to set the scene.
- Day02–04
Coastal ecology fieldwork
Rock-pool quadrats, salt-marsh transects and intertidal sampling along the Suffolk coast. Evenings: lab work, species ID and field journals.
- Day05
RSPB Minsmere & conservation
A full day at the RSPB Minsmere reserve with a guest curator. Bird-hide observation, habitat restoration work, and a session on policy-led conservation.
- Day06–07
Sustainability seminars & harbour study
Two days on UN SDGs 13, 14 and 15. Microplastic sampling at Lowestoft harbour with a working marine scientist. Climate-fiction creative-writing evening.
- Day08–10
Capstone group project
Pairs design and run a small original study answering one specific sustainability question on the Suffolk coast, under tutor supervision. Sports and arts afternoons.
- Day11
Cambridge day-trip
A guided morning at the Sedgwick Earth Sciences Museum, a punt along the Cam, a walk through Kings College, and tea at a riverside boathouse.
- Day12–13
Project finalisation & showcase
Poster prep, peer review, dress rehearsal, then a Friday showcase evening with parents joining by video link. Certificates issued.
- Day14
Farewell & return
Goodbye breakfast, kit packed, coach back to Heathrow with our chaperones.

For the science-minded 14–17 year-old.
Best suited to students considering biology, environmental science, geography or earth-system degrees — or anyone whose climate concern wants somewhere to go.
- Ages 14–17; biology to Year 9 / Class 9 standard is enough.
- Conversational English for seminars and pair-work.
- A genuine interest in the natural world — comfortable with mud, cold water and early starts.
- Considering biology, ecology or environmental science at A-level / IB / undergrad.
- Happy in a small cohort (18 places) and tolerant of British weather.
