Shebbear College sits between Bideford and the northern edge of Dartmoor — a 180-year-old Methodist boarding school on a sprawling country campus that has educated boys (since 1841) and girls (since 1992) into rounded, low-ego, capable adults.
It is a school that takes character formation as seriously as exam results, with a faculty famously generous with time, a chapel that genuinely matters, and a music programme that punches above the school’s size.
Heritage
Founded in 1841 by the Bible Christian Methodists to educate the sons of West Country farmers, Shebbear is one of the oldest co-educational Methodist boarding schools in England. The original buildings still anchor a much-expanded campus, and the school’s nonconformist heritage is felt today in an unusually warm pastoral culture and a wholehearted ethos.

The school’s motto — Truth, Learning, Virtue — is taken straight; students are pushed to do their best work without being asked to perform. Boarding houses
Five boarding houses, each with its own colours and traditions. Single and shared rooms; common rooms with table tennis and quiet reading nooks.
Music school
Eight practice rooms, a concert hall, a 19th-century chapel for choir, and a director of music with conservatoire ties.
Science & D&T
Recently refurbished science labs, a working D&T workshop with laser cutter and 3D printers, and a small ICT studio.
Sport
Astro pitches, indoor sports hall, swimming pool, rugby and cricket fields, and a small equestrian centre on site.
Dartmoor edge
A 20-minute drive lands students on Dartmoor for outdoor education, navigation, climbing and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.
Pastoral & medical
On-site medical centre with daytime nurse, on-call doctor, and a counselling service. House parents live in residence.
