Royal Hospital School
A leading co-educational boarding and day school in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the River Stour — with a proud maritime heritage stretching back to 1712, world-class sailing, and a boarding culture three centuries in the making.
Three centuries of heritage, on 200 acres above the Stour.
Royal Hospital School is a co-educational boarding and day school for 11–18 year-olds set in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the River Stour estuary — about an hour from London by train. Founded by Royal Charter in 1712, it combines grand architecture and deep tradition with a genuinely modern, outward-looking education.
The headline strengths are its full-boarding culture (one of the most established in the country), world-class sailing and outdoor education, and a music programme anchored by a famous chapel choir.
Heritage
Founded in Greenwich in 1712 to educate the children of seafarers, the school moved to its purpose-built Suffolk campus at Holbrook in 1933. Its maritime story is lived, not just remembered — from the ceremonial Divisions parade to sailing on the doorstep — while today’s intake comes from every kind of family, UK and international.
Ethos & values
The school builds character around loyalty, commitment, courage, respect, service and integrity. Boarding is the heartbeat of the community — full, weekly and flexi options — with house staff who live on site and know every child by name.
A school of real scale and tradition.
Large enough for exceptional facilities and breadth; structured so every student is known within their house.
