Programme overview

Field marine science with a sustainability spine.

Set on the Suffolk coast where the Blyth meets the North Sea, this fortnight pairs classical marine biology — rock-pool surveys, transects, lab work — with the harder, more current questions: How is this coastline changing? What does the UN’s SDG 14 (Life Below Water) ask of a young scientist? What does a working harbour do about microplastics?

Mornings are lectures and seminars led by practising marine ecologists; afternoons are out on the shore with quadrats, salinity meters and field notebooks; evenings are lab analysis, sport and the gentle rhythm of British boarding life.

Why this programme matters

Marine science without sustainability is incomplete; sustainability without fieldwork is theory. We refuse both halves. Students leave with a publishable-grade group project, a working knowledge of three UN SDGs, and — just as importantly — the embodied memory of cold North Sea water on their hands at 7am. That is what changes how a 16 year-old talks about climate for the next decade.

Programme structure

  1. Day01

    Arrival & coastal orientation

    Heathrow pick-up, coach to St Felix, room allocation, welcome dinner and a sunset walk along the Southwold beach to set the scene.

  2. Day02–04

    Coastal ecology fieldwork

    Rock-pool quadrats, salt-marsh transects and intertidal sampling along the Suffolk coast. Evenings: lab work, species ID and field journals.

  3. Day05

    RSPB Minsmere & conservation

    A full day at the RSPB Minsmere reserve with a guest curator. Bird-hide observation, habitat restoration work, and a session on policy-led conservation.

  4. Day06–07

    Sustainability seminars & harbour study

    Two days on UN SDGs 13, 14 and 15. Microplastic sampling at Lowestoft harbour with a working marine scientist. Climate-fiction creative-writing evening.

  5. Day08–10

    Capstone group project

    Pairs design and run a small original study answering one specific sustainability question on the Suffolk coast, under tutor supervision. Sports and arts afternoons.

  6. Day11

    Cambridge day-trip

    A guided morning at the Sedgwick Earth Sciences Museum, a punt along the Cam, a walk through Kings College, and tea at a riverside boathouse.

  7. Day12–13

    Project finalisation & showcase

    Poster prep, peer review, dress rehearsal, then a Friday showcase evening with parents joining by video link. Certificates issued.

  8. Day14

    Farewell & return

    Goodbye breakfast, kit packed, coach back to Heathrow with our chaperones.

  • Ages 14–17; biology to Year 9 / Class 9 standard is enough.
  • Conversational English for seminars and pair-work.
  • A genuine interest in the natural world — comfortable with mud, cold water and early starts.

It shares the same coastline and many of the same tutors, but the focus broadens from species and ecology to sustainability and climate. There is more seminar time on policy, more harbour-based fieldwork, and a structured capstone built around UN SDGs.
Yes, if you are curious. We expect biology to Year 9 / Class 9 standard; the rest is taught. The students who get the most are the ones who ask questions in the field, not necessarily those with the highest marks.
It is outdoor, not athletic. Expect three or four hours of standing, crouching and walking on coastline a day. Sturdy waterproof boots and a willingness to get wet hands are far more important than fitness.
A wellies-and-waterproofs packing list goes out six weeks before departure. You do not need specialist scientific kit — we provide quadrats, meters, hand lenses and notebooks.
Yes — afternoons usually have an hour or two of choice, including sailing, swimming, choir or studio art. Sunday is a deliberate slower day.
Yes, and we encourage it. A printed copy of your poster, your method log and your tutor’s signed reference are posted home for that exact use.
About 75% science, 25% culture. The Cambridge day, the Sunday excursions and the bird reserve are deliberate counterpoints to the lab.
The middle Saturday is the Cambridge day-trip. Sundays are slower — brunch, beach walks, optional chapel, reading and time to digest the week.

St Felix has a medical room with a qualified nurse during the day and on-call doctor at night. Parents are contacted within an hour of anything beyond a minor issue.
